The entire jawline training market has been built on a single category confusion: training the masseter versus training the suprahyoid group. These are two different muscle groups with opposite effects on the visible face. Almost every jaw trainer sold trains the wrong one.

Masseter: the muscle every other trainer loads
The masseter is a thick, powerful muscle on the side of the face. It runs from the cheekbone down to the angle of the jaw. It is the primary muscle of chewing, closes the jaw with tremendous force, and is one of the strongest muscles in the human body relative to its size.

Reducing masseter mass is a standard cosmetic procedure precisely because masseter growth widens the face. This is not opinion. It is the reverse operation of what happens with jaw trainers.
Suprahyoid: the muscle group HYOIDR loads

When trained, the suprahyoid group hypertrophies. The underside of the jaw pulls taut. The visible jaw to neck angle sharpens toward ninety degrees. The lower face becomes more defined, not wider.
This is the opposite effect from masseter training. Same visible region of the face. Opposite result.
Why the market confuses them
Both muscle groups live in the same general area of the face. Both feel active when you clench your jaw. To the untrained eye, if a muscle is working near the jaw, it must be a jaw muscle. So chewing devices sold as jaw trainers are assumed to train the jaw.
They do. The wrong part of the jaw.
The masseter is above the mandible on the side. The suprahyoid group is below the mandible under the chin. Both are jaw muscles by anatomical definition. But they do opposite things to the visible profile.
The chewing based products were built first because chewing is the obvious way to load jaw muscles. Nobody at those companies asked which muscles produce which visual effect. So the market grew around masseter training, which produces a wider face, marketed as producing a sharper jawline. It does not.
How to know which one a product actually trains
Simple test:
- Does it involve biting or chewing? Trains the masseter. Widens the face.
- Does it involve pushing your chin down or forward against resistance? Trains the suprahyoid group. Sharpens the jaw to neck angle.
- Does it involve breathing hard against resistance? Trains the suprahyoid group and other upper airway muscles. Sharpens the jaw to neck angle.
- Does it involve holding your tongue on the palate? Neither. That is posture correction.
The chewing test is the fastest. If you have to bite it, chew it, or hold it in your teeth, it trains the wrong muscle group for a sharper jawline.
When masseter training makes sense
It does make sense for some people. If you have a naturally narrow face and want a squarer, wider lower face, masseter hypertrophy delivers exactly that. Boxers and MMA fighters sometimes train the masseter deliberately for wider jaw appearance and impact resistance.
The problem is not masseter training as a concept. The problem is masseter training marketed as jawline sharpening. Those are opposite goals.
The combination approach
